First, press the "Don't Panic!" button. :)
You have everything you need to fix it right now: ProSel. ProSel can
rebuild the directory information. It's basically a two step process:
1) Repair volume (see below)
2) Recover munged files (ditto)
Repair Volume
In ProSel, find the volume number in question and go to Volume Repair.
Choose Main directory repair, and answer No when it asks whether to
assume a valid bitmap. (See page 45 in your manual) When done, do a
Test of the volume (there will probably be some errors), and then the
normal Fix mode repair. When done, leave ProSel and check things out.
Recover Files
Find room on another volume and back up the volume just fixed, as is. Or
back up to floppies or whatever media you use for backups. Treat this
backup as an interim backup, as not all of the files may be intact. I
know not everyone has lots of free space on their hard drives; this step
is strongly encouraged for complete recovery.
Once your interim backup is made, you will need some space on another
volume for any recovered files. The size needed is unknowable ahead of
time; but it shouldn't be too big. (You can use empty 3.5" disks, if
necessary.) What you will need are several folders on the volume. Give
them short names, as ProSel will ask you for full pathnames. (I chose
/a, /b, /c, etc.)
Go back to ProSel's Volume Repair and choose Recover Files. It will
prompt you for your pathname(s). (If you run out of folders, create more!)
Some files will be intact, others not. Read page 46 for more information.
That should do it! If you got lucky and no file damage occurred, Step 1 is
all you have to do. :)
