The problem is evidently with your ftp program. when I connect from
a UNIX shell (using ftp), there are no such funny filenames and the
files received are not in binhex format.
My suspicion is that your ftp program is telling Caltech to binhex the
files before they are sent to you. There are good reasons why a ftp server
running on a Mac, like Caltech, would provide this as an option. However,
I know that this is not the default, as I can connect from UNIX and have
no trouble. My conclusion is that your ftp program is requesting this
option, for some reason.
