This is wrong. If no disk is present in the built-in 3.5 drive, the
Apple IIc Plus will immediately search any drives connected to the disk
port (including 5.25 drives). The effective speed will be ~4 MHz, but the
machine does slow down to 1.024 MHz each time the drive is accessed. To
keep it at 1.024 MHz though (so that games play as they would on a stock
Apple II) simply requires you hold down the 'ESC' key.
So leave the internal 3.5 drive empty, insert the 5.25" diskette in
the external drive and then press Apple-Control-Esc-Reset. The proper way
to do it is to hold down the first three keys, then press and release
'Reset' while still holding down the others. The words "Normal" should
appear on screen.
