The information Apple gave out when the Apple IIGS was released was that
there would be 50,000 Woz signature editions. I never heard anyone revise
or dispute that number.
According to Tim Swihart, in a talk he gave at the last KansasFest he
attended, about 1,000,000 Apple IIGS computers were sold. About 2/3 of
these were ROM 0 or ROM 1 (and all ROM 0 machines were upgraded free to
ROM 1 if the user brought them in) and the rest were ROM 3.
I don't remember the number of Apple IIGS's that were sold to schools, but
as best I recall, Tim said it was either 2/3 or 3/4 of the total. He said
the vast majority of the school machines were actually used as accelerated
Apple //e machines.
