Programs like ProTERM and Appleworks should not crash. I'd run a
self-test (ctrl-open apple-close apple-reset) and whatever RAM checker
program AE supplied with their Ramworks card. Something bad is happening
somewhere, intermittently.

"RELocatable code" [A partial list can be gotten on the net at
ftp://ftp.apple.com/dts/aii/ftn/ftn-about-92-06] What's intriguing is
that the hex code (how it's stored on disk) for REL is $FE, just one
bit off from SYS's $FF. I'd suspect that something, software or
hardware, is corrupting your directories. Not cool. That's why I
recommended running the RAM checkers above.

You also may want to invest in ProSEL-8 from Charlie's Appleseeds
[(619) 566-1297] to periodically verify the disk structure of your HD,
and make plenty of backups of any files you care about.
