There's a MS language card in my Bell & Howell too. These are relics of a
time when Microsoft had a little originality and innovation, unlike now where
they have to buy or simply copy someone else's products to have products. 
I just read in CommunicationsWeek how they want to put out their own Java
which, of course, is optimized for wintel. Ignoring the fact that Java was
intended to be platform independent. Pretty typical.
