I thought I remembered seeing ads for this once long ago, but I can't seem
to find it in my old computer magazines.

If memory serves, this was probably one of those combined serial/parallel/
whatever-else-you-can-imagine cards.

This is a 6809 coprocessor card.  It probably won't be of much use to you
without the software that goes with it.

Err...how small?  If "small" means "about 7.25 in. by 2.75 in.," and it has
a little red LED and four switches on it, then it's a Microsoft Softcard, a
Z80 coprocessor card.  You'll need a Microsoft CP/M boot disk to get any
use out of it.
