You can only speak for yourself.

I fully agree with Sheldon. I'm on c.s.a2 since 1990 (ballpark), and I'm also
wondering why it did work before. Well, it was fun while lasted. I now realize
that c.s.a2 way back then was a unique place reserved for those who had such a
strong interest in the Apple II that they were willing to take the time to 
learn Unix and how this far from perfect Internet worked. Today, this barrier
has gone. The only way to enjoy the same low noise level is probably to get an
account on a commercial service (Genie) where costs replace the previously
technical barriers.
