That seems strange.  If djpeg is creating scratch files, it would
make more sense to put them into either

	1.  The current directory;
	2.  The directory containing the jpeg data file; or
	3.  P_tmpdir (typically /tmp).  The location of P_tmpdir
	    should be able to be overridden through the TMPDIR 
	    environment variable.

I would be surprised if the original Unix version of djpeg used 
dirname `which djpeg` as the location of data files since that 
directory would in general not be writable.
