Why would Caltech be needing to use ShrinkII to compress files to be
placed on the archive, when they would be receiving files which are
already compressed with ShrinkIt?

The only way this would make sense is if they expand the original
archive to check for viruses or whatever, then compress it again and
throw away the original archive.  I find this hard to believe.

It is much more likely that they have just been uploaded via a Mac
program which has added some kind of header (e.g. MacBinary or
AppleSingle).  Spectrum will remove a MacBinary header when it downloads
a file, but AppleSingle is a little harder to deal with.

I haven't had any problems with it, though I mainly use it for
extracting archives, not creating them.  Have you reported these bugs to
EGO Systems?
