	I had a Commodore VIC-20 when I built an Apple ][ clone from a 
bare board.  I spent all my money on the motherboard and one disk drive 
and didn't have anything left over for a real keyboard.  So I programmed 
the VIC-20's user port to send ASCII to the Apple.  It worked really 
well.  The VIC-20 could even be programmed to send whole strings to the 
Apple with a single keystroke.  I had a "smart" keyboard!
