I think that's right.  The IIgs was running at 3.5MHz, while the Amiga,
Mac, and other comparable machines were doing a good 8MHz.  You could get
third-party accelerators that would push the IIgs to 8MHz and beyond.

The IIgs had a mousey desktop, color, and legacy software.  I suppose
Apple had to do something if they wanted Mac to catch on.

Come to that, I remember I was a wee lad taking a group tour of Control
Data in Minnesota.  At the end, the guide showed us a Macintosh, the menus
and icons and windows, and said it will be the way of the future.  I guess
he was right.  Not necessarily Mac, but there aren't many desktop machines
these days that don't have a mouse attached.
