No, Nathan is not god, and I see these unrelated posts too, but on some
groups the unrelated posts have risen to a level which is drowning out
the on-topic community. Maybe it won't erase the noise level, but
efforts like his may help to keep it to a manageable level. Ignoring
the problem doesn't seem to deter the spammers. At the very least,
it should be possible to educate the newbies. Many times, people
behave in ways contrary to general netiquette simply out of ignorance,
and are happy to change their activities to get along better. I'm
not proposing that there is some overall "PC" guide to net behavior,
but a certain amount of consideration for others generally makes it
possible for the bulk of us to get along.
Anyway, people *DO* care when they find their favorite newsgroup
filled with crap. It's an annoyance to search through sex adds,
help me upgrade my pc BS, etc. If you don't find it annoying, then
kudos for your tolerance, but I, and I suspect many others, wish
that newsgroups were a lot cleaner, like they were a while back,
before half the population posted via netscape, etc.
Maybe it'd be better to reserve such advice for off-topic posts to
private email. On the other hand, posting as well as mailing lets
the rest of the readers know that someone has already responded, and
prevents the person from having their mailbox stuffed for what is
a relatively minor offense.
Anyway, I don't understand why you'd be pissed at Nathan Mates for
simply trying to keep down the off-topic posts (i.e. - the garbage)
in this group. We have enough annoyance as it is.
