One failure story:

PMPFax does not work with a ZyXEL U-1496E (and presumably every other
ZyXEL U-1496 series modem).  I haven't tried it with later ZyXEL models
(the Omni and Elite series).  It might be possible to get the program to
work by patching it, but I just reverted to Faxination (which works fine
for sending, all that I need to do).

I was able to use PMPFax with a modem I borrowed from work (a GVC X-Link
144E), but only if I forced it to use class 1 instead of class 2 (or its
default auto-selection mode).
