Try the test you described except hold down the Paper Eject button
instead of the Print Quality button. My working IW II also turns on the
error light when I try the test you described. The test that is started
by using the Paper Eject button is the standard test I use to check out
IW II's. If it prints okay, then I would suspect the cable. Once
however, I had a bad connection at the cable connector inside the
printer. A wire was pinched by the leg assembly and eventually
separated. Under that condition, the self test worked fine but the
printer would not print properly until I fixed the broken wire.
