I'll second your impression of the Chu book. I have it here and it definitely stands out from the crowd.
One of my biggest hurdles is understanding how to setup a basic environment where I can call out the Apple bus signals symbolically and be clear about where they appear on the FPGA and the ASIC adapter. The schematics are scattered across about 5 or 6 documents and I need to spend some time to form a mental picture.
