Imagewriter + Appletalk Question

Hi there!  We want to connect an Imagewriter II on an Appletalk
network with 2 Powermacs and 1 HP Deskwriter already installed.
According to the manual, in order to get the Imagewriter to
work on Appletalk, Dip Switch 2-4 needs to be set to closed.
However, this doesn't work.  Leaving it open doesn't work either
because the Imagewriter wants to use either the printer or the
modem port.  In order to use it over the printer port we have
to disable Appletalk which defeats the whole purpose.
We KNOW we can do it over Ethernet, but that's not the point.
We don't want to spend $120 on an ethernet hub.  Well, we do, 
but it's a pointless expense at this point.  

Any suggestions?
