Start out with the default settings they show in the manual. That
is accellerated for all slots except 2 and 6. Slot 6 must remain
unaccellerated if you are using a 5.25" drive. I suspect the slot 2
is due to problems with some modems.
Since I don't normally have the 5.25" drive attached, I keep slot 6
accellerated as well.
For your ref, the default switch settings (from page 7 of the manual)
are as follows. The sw1-7 and sw1-8 values are dependent on how much
cache you have:
12345678
sw1 101001xx
sw2 10111010
I've never seen the modem problems you describe. Check to ensure that
the slot your modem is using is unaccellerated, then see if the problem
recurs. Beyond that I don't have any suggestions.
