ProDOS/Applesoft file ?'s...

Two questions about text file handling under ProDOS and BASIC.SYSTEM...

I'm fairly well experienced with text file handling under DOS 3.3; just
wondering about some differences with ProDOS:

1) Has the APPEND command been fixed? I mean, can I safely APPEND to a
file, or should I continue with my usual workarounds?

2) Can I specify a byte parameter greater than 32,767? Or do I still
need to use the "long record" workaround?

I'm writing a program that handles a data heap which consists of a random
access file with a variable record length, and an index file to find where
those records begin. At the moment, though, my source file (which,
admittedly, is HTML) is 109k. I think it will crush down to about 50k,
which is still longer than 32,767 bytes...

Any advice welcome; I'd ask c.s.a2.programmer, except that it is not
carried on my news server... 8-(
