Applesoft commands

My in-laws bought a AppleIIc for $5 recently and needed a simple database
program for keeping track of my Mother-in-laws antiques.  I tried looking
at some of the disks that were thrown in to figure out the Applesoft
Basic language.  Do you really do disk accesses with chr$(4)+"open filename"
etc..??  The FAQ doesn't have a pointer to the applesoft basic command set
(It didn't come with any manuals).  Does someone have a list of commands?
I can't figure out renumber (is this part of the basic BASIC?).
