Stupid AppleTalk Tricks (HELP!)
Okay, maybe I am asking too much. Or maybe I am missing something trivial.
Somehow, back when I had System 6.0 and later System 6.0.1 on my IIgs, I
had the DC printer driver installed for the Imagewriter II, and the Net
Printer driver installed for the LaserWriter. When I was at home, my
configuration on my ROM 01 GS was as follows:
Slot 1: Printer Port
Slot 2: Modem Port
Slot 3: Video Overlay Card
Slot 4: Mouse Firmware
Slot 5: SmartPort
Slot 6: Disk Port
Slot 7: Vulcan GS
And if I took my computer to work to use the LaserWriter, the
configuration changed as follows:
Slot 1: Vacated
Slot 2: Modem Port
Slot 3: Video Overlay Card
Slot 4: Mouse firmware
Slot 5: SmartPort
Slot 6: Vulcan GS
Slot 7: AppleTalk
Well, this worked beautifully. I simply activated AppleTalk, connected
the printer port to the AppleTalk network with the printer, and chose the
LaserWriter in the Chooser, and PRESTO! I was printing on the
LaserWriter. When I got done, I switched the HD card around again (I have
a couple of ][e's so I actually use my 5.25" drive at home), reset the
control panel, hooked up the ImageWriter at home, and I was in business.
Since then, I have completely reinstalled GS/OS (well, actually, I
replaced the Vulcan GS with a high-speed SCSI card and a 250Mb hard
drive). But now, when I have AppleTalk installed but not active, I get an
error message ("Unable to establish the requested AppleTalk connection"
or something like that) when I try to boot. Not a major big deal, except
that it means that the machine can not boot unattended.
Now, in the past, I was able to have AppleTalk available but shut off,
with both the printer drivers installed, in such a way that I could switch
between the AppleTalk printer configuration and the DC Printer
configuration by merely changing the control panel (I didn't have to set
file attributes to "Inactive" or anything like that) and I never got an
error message on boot-up.
Does anyone know how I did it? I'd like to do it again!
