     Aha! That's your problem: no joystick!

     There are some alternative tries. With a bare-bones setup, power-ON
the computer with the lid off. Use a plastic rod or pencil (eraser side)
to gently flex the motherboard at different points. Especially try near
the power supply plug, near the center of the Slots, near the mem card
socket, near the microprocessor socket. If nothing noticable happens, try
doing periodic boots (OA-CTRL-RESET) as you press.

     What you're looking for is a bad contact, specifically, a poorly
socketed IC or a solder-mounted IC with a lifted foot or a fractured
solder point (near the PS plug), or, even, a broken trace on the Slot
plane.

     Another try is to scooch up and re-socket all socketed IC's. This
includes IC's covered by the power supply. Also, pull off and re-connect
the PS plug.

     Something else to check-- perhaps first-- is the chance that a
speaker lead has been caught between the motherboard and a bottom support
and has been punctured by a circuit point. (This requires pulling the
supply, un-latching the front (green light) cover, loosening a nut or two,
and removing the motherboard.)

    You will be able to closely inspect the PS socket and Slot sockets for
loose pins and broken circuit traces. Also check that some bent shielding
is not messing up one of the plugs (like the Game Port) on the back.

    You can check continuity from PS socket pins to points on the Slot
sockets.

    Check your battery. If the leads are loose or bare leads are flopping
around they could cause shorts.

    A fried motherboard is possible; but, it does not seem likely.
