AE 5.25 Disk

I am trying to help someone with a free Apple //e.  It has an "AE 5.25 
Half-Height Disk Drive" plugged in but I cannot get it to boot the 
system.  I took it home and tried it on my GS and it doesn't work for me 
either.  It does the boot sound but just sits there and the light stays 
lit.  I just loaned my Apple 5.25 to get the //e running but I started to 
wonder about the AE disk drive.  

Is this an Apple type drive or could it be a PCT type ibm drive made by 
AE?  There is not other markings on the drive except for the "removal 
voids warranty" sticker (hahaha).  Any ideas?
