Contrary to what has been said in this group already by Nathan,

All you need to hook up an HP Deskjet 500C to the AppleIIgs is

Standard serial cable DB-25 to Mini Din 8 - If you go into a computer
store the cable is an ImageWriterII to Mac Plus cable....

I have had this setup for about 4 years until recently when I got my
LaserWriter Plus printer.

After you have the hardware connected you will need a set of drivers.

I prefer the Harmonie series from Vitesse since they were all I have 
ever come across.  Independence is good too I hear from Seven Hills
Software. 

Make sure you get the latest release of the Harmonie package for best
results.  Anyone know what that is off hand????  I think mine is
2.0p if I remember right for the DJ DRIVER..

Hope this helps you out.  The Deskjet 500C is COLOR by changing out the
cartridges and also has the dual ports.  Serial AND Parallel.
