The processor in most to all Apple IIs has been socketed. (Except
for laptops and game consoles, I'd be surprised if a system didn't
have it socketed. Workstations, PC, Apple IIs, etc that I've opened up
were all socketed.) This allowed drop-in replacements for the 6502
and 65C02, such as that in the enhancement kit, ZipChip, etc.
You could probably find a new 65C02 for <$5; no need to purchase
the enhancement kit. Most //es actually had 2Mhz 6502/65C02s-- the
extra processor speed allowed it to send memory requests out to the
bus a little faster (might have been needed), but the system is still
locked down to the 1Mhz clock signal. Running a chip slower than its
rated speed is usually just fine.
