I had the problem with copying files myself, to the point of inventing my own
code to cure it when I didn't see an easier way around it. I must say that
using localtalk instead of sneakernet caused the problem to become moot for
me, hence I never finished the program I was writing to work around it.

The point here is that there is a way to get this to work. No one's trying to
say that no one is having problems. Not doing things right can cause problems
in a lot of things. Can't speak for others but I'm just trying to figure out
ways to get this to work and get the info out to people who are having trouble.

This is the bottom line, and I hope you'll get anyone having trouble to try
this: If you move the radio button from automatic to binary inside Fetch
before transferring a file, the resulting Mac file has no resource fork.
If you copy the file to a ProDOS disk, it will show up as a standard type $00
file on a II. Fetch sets the type/creator to ????/???? on a file transferred
in binary mode so $00 is used in ProDOS. If you want to get fancy you can set
the file type/creator to TEXT/pdos before copying and the file will be TXT on
the II. BinSCII and Shrinkit will open this file pretty-as-you-please, or you
can exec it if the type is TXT and it's execable. As I mentioned, I started
out with IIe, the Mac //e emulator, and nothing but a 5.25 disk image file 
with ProDOS 8 1.9 and BASIC, plus a 3.5 disk copy of Appleworks. I downloaded 
BinSCII and Shrinkit using Fetch and got them to run and can download other
files and use them. It took some trial and error to find out how to make it
work; it was by luck that I discovered that Fetch doesn't fork a binary trans-
ferred file. My first tries of getting Appleworks to read text files copied
from Mac disks to ProDOS didn't work since ProDOS 8 gagged on the extended
files. But the drag and drop fork stripper cured that for files needing it,
and simply downloading other files the right way made them work.
So there's the solution - download files in binary mode or use the stripper
on existing files. That's really all it takes.
