The comp.sys.apple II Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) answers most
of these questions. For a mini-tutorial on downloading and longer
answers to these questions, go to

//es pretty much come in two flavors: regular and enhanced. The
difference (well, technically in one ROM chip only, but systems
_should_ be enhanced by swapping 4 chips) is noted at boot. At the top
of the screen, it should say either "Apple ][" or "Apple //e". The
first is a sign of an unenhanced //e, the second is the enhanced. The
processor is (unless someone did some chip swapping) a 1.023Mhz 6502
in the unenhanced //e, 1.023Mhz 65C02 in the enhanced.
//es usually had 64 or 128K of ram total; without diagnostic programs,
it's hard to tell. If they are running Appleworks, note how much memory
is listed as being free on adding a file-- if it's <10K, it's most likely
64K, if it's 30-55K, it's probably 128K.
Hard drives for most Apple IIs are external, but schools rarely got
around to putting that minimum of functionality on their Apple IIs. If
there isn't an external HD, but you suspect there might be one, open
it up and take a look at the power supply at left. If there's only a
power cable (6 wires) coming out of it to the motherboard, no HD. If
there's a ribbon cable going to a card in a slot, and the power supply
says "Vulcan" or "Insider," then there is a HD.
