In a PC clone I saw recently a disk controller cable which had both types
of connectors on the drive side (4 connectors, one of each variety for
each of the 2 drives you can connect) and the small
connector-which-goes-on-metal-pins on the controller side. Perhaps such a
cable would help. Reversing cables and stuff  in my GS once cost me an IWM
chip (and the motherboard attached...).
