Thanks, alot of good info (deleted here for space).  I had tried powering 
the HD from an SE/30 then running it from the GS, but the results were 
the same.  IS there a place where the DMA SCSI card mod is documented?  
The termination power issue is an interesting one.  The drive is a pull 
from a powerbook 100.  Perhaps a newer drive will favor me with better 
reults?
