I can just see the board meetings:

CEO to flunkie: "We're in the top 5 personal computer makers, and you
want us to come out with a line of home appliances?"

Flunkie: "It's our only hope of survival"

CEO: "Uhhh, you're right. [Consults rolodex, makes calls to other
companies]. Ok, I quit, and am joining a company with a chance at
making it. You're fired, too, so you can't tell the next guy what you
just told me."

Personal computers to smart toasters. Nobody'd want to take that
step. And by the way, here's another secretly taped conversation from
the Apple boardroom:

Marketing Schmuck: "We need to cut back on our product line. It seems
as if market research (if calling my mom 20 minutes ago _is_ research)
shows that consumers can't decide between our many computer models,
so they're not buying Apples."

Board member with clue 1: "They can't decide, so they bought PCs?
Those things with a hundred times the number of models?" (closeup:
sarcastic expression on face)

Marketing: "Uhhh, yeah. That's right." (realizes he's a schmuck, but
can't do anything about it, since he's in marketing)

Board member 2: "Why can't we get anyone with a clue to buy our
computers?"

Board member 3: "We suck? A real OS like linux has been available
for PCs for years now?"
