   Sounds like a problem on the motherboard, the monitor, or the cable
between them. Try jiggling the cable around and seeing if that produces
any effects.

   Also, with all socketed chips on the motherboard, try pressing them
down into their sockets. It's best to use your thumb and press on the
whole chip at once-- pressing with a screwdriver may shatter the
chip. You may hear some creaking as this happens; that's normal.

   It should report that the system is ok. If it reboots, you need to
hold down the solid apple key. If it hangs or does nothing, there's
other problems, and the whole system's probably pretty hosed.

   If that doesn't help, suspect the monitor, video cable, or the 
motherboard itself.
