I've seen some of these mods, but I prefer not to cut up the case.

I understand--I've usually avoided it myself.  ;-)

How about sticking the CF socket under the keyboard?  It could
be surface-mounted flat against the metal and be very convenient
to swap--if you like to swap 128+MB volumes!  (Frankly, I find
having one set of 4x32MB volumes quite enough, and I remove it
only to back it up on a PC [in about a minute!].)
