   The GNO/ME shell for the Apple IIGS is about as close as you're
going to get. It provides multitasking of text apps (with one desktop
app at once, unless you use the Switch-It addon), a command shell, and
a bunch of ports or rewrites of unix basic programs. Due to hardware
limitations, no memory protection or virtual memory. [Which is why
programs that are utter hogs of memory like X11 and gcc have not been
ported, and likely will not without a rewrite from scratch.] Compilers
are not part of the distribution, but The Byte Works sells a set of
compilers that work great with GNO/ME.
