Are you referring to the cassette ports on the back of the machine?

Those are so that you can plug 1/8" phone plugs into the computer and
connect it to the microphone and earphone jacks on a standard cassette
recorder (y'know, like you can't hardly buy anymore...). Access commands
are as follows:

]LOAD loads an Applesoft program from the tape port
>LOAD loads an Integer BASIC program from the tape port
]SAVE saves the current Applesoft program to the tape port
>SAVE saves the current Integer BASIC program to the tape port
]SHLOAD loads a shape-table from the tape port
*nnnn.nnnnW Saves a binary image of $nnnn-$nnnn to the tape port
*nnnnR loads a binary image from the tape port into memory at $nnnn

Probably not the best option for mass-storage, if you ask me. But handy
to have around if you happen to get a neat program written in Applesoft,
but suddenly discover you have irreparibly damaged DOS in the process:
just SAVE the file to tape, re-boot, and re-LOAD from tape, then SAVE
FILENAME on disk. This is also why if you type "SAVE" or "LOAD" and do
not specify a filename, the machine appears to hang. It doesn't
really...it's just trying to access the tape port.

Not sure if this is what you were wondering about, but here it is anyway...
