need help using proterm

Hi. I inherited an apple //e enhanced and after some good advice about
jumper settings on my ss11 card was able to access my online service
with it and my hayes compt. external modem. The main problem I have now
is that once I get online I don't know how to access the proterm
commands like r for receiving a file.When I'm not online I see a nice
menu with all the command selections and they work fine. It doesn't do
any good to download a file while you're not online though,
and as soon as I log in the proterm menu disappears. Unfortunately I
don't have any docs for this program. It's version 3.1 if that helps.

Another problem I can live with if I have to is that I have my serial
jumpers set for 14.4kbps and my modem is capable but my program has no
selection for a modem this fast so I use hayes compt. 2400 selection.
When I login I connect at 2400. I would, of course, like to connect at
a higher rate.
