I dug up the UDC manual. It lists 13 different supported drive
configurations. First, it does =not= support any daisy-chain in which a
5.25 comes before a 3.5.
To do what you want, the UDC must be installed in slot 5. Put the 3.5 on
J1, and daisy-chain the 5.25 to the 3.5. The manual says that both drives
will be bootable with this configuration. The boot-up drive will be Drive
1.
What I have always done is put my 5.25 drives on a regular 5.25 controller
in slot 6, and put my 3.5's on the UDC in slot 5. This avoids problems
with some DOS 3.3 software that assumes that the drive is in slot 6.
J1 supports daisy-chaining up to 4 drives. The third and fourth drives
will be mapped to slot 2. However, while J1 supports up to 4 drives, it is
not recommended to daisy-chain more than two drives because of signal
degradation. J2 does not support daisy-chaining.
