Apple IIe Disk Drive

I've got a friend who is trying to read some old Apple IIe disks using the
old computer and disk drive. He claims that the computer boots up fine but
he doesn't know enough about the OS to get it to read the disks, even to
see a directory. The disks may have old text files or old OLD Quicken
files. Geez I didn't realize Quicken was that old! Anyway, if anyone can
give me a crash course on old Apple OS commands, or the location of a FAQ
for this newsgroup that might have some instructions or troubleshooting
tips, I'd be most grateful.
