One possibility is a low-end/used terminal server between the ethernet and
your serial card. Might be overkill but it is an option. Plugs into the
ethernet connection and provides serial ports. Kinda like the idea of a
unix box serving as an intermediary, but simpler. Get one with SLIP/PPP
for the possibility of running TCP/IP on the GS in the future.
Yet another possibility: ask the university to re-wire the jack as a
serial connection to a university terminal server. :)
