I've bought a GS or two that was experiencing the same sort of
yellowing you describe. In extreme cases I've pulled out the
mother board, power supply and speaker and scrubbled it down
with a "soft" abrasive pad (the kind with a sponge on one side
and a white scrub material on the reverse) and a solution of
clorox cleanup and warm water. It does a super job of removing
ALL of the discoloration. Simply avoid scrubbing, or be very
careful, around the apple logo and IIGS script on the front of
the case. If you let the sloution remain on the case for a few
minutes before rinsing, you'll have far less scrubbing to do.
the same method works well for platinum IIe's too.
You can use an old stiff bristle tooth brush, dipped in the
solution, to clean the ventilation grooves on the top of the
case.
I then rinse them thoroughly with warm water and "dust" out the
water with compressed air and dry them overnight. Evidently,
many types of plastics react with time and oxidation. I was told
that gas or oil heat used in a building with certain types of
plasitcs can speed up this discoloration, something to do with
the sulphur content I believe. (for what that's worth!)
