I would hope that most people avoid the use of BASIC.SYSTEM if they
want to do anything like browsing through the contents of a volume
with lots of subdirectories. It is generally much easier to use an
interactive utility program, even something as ugly as System
Utilities.

I would suggest to use Prodos8 version 1.9 or later, rename all
.SYSTEM files (like BASIC.SYSTEM to BASIC).
If a program selector is really needed, try SNEEZE (freeware) which can even
display graphics.
