14.4Kbaud + SCSI = ?
Okay, here's the question for you gurus...
I finally bought a 250Mb SCSI hard drive, nice and cheap. For what it's
worth, it shows up on the system as ":Gemini," ":Cyclone,"
":Tornado," ":Thunderbolt" (each 32Mb ProDOS) and ":Magnum" (107Mb HFS).
Because I haven't yet got all the data transferred to the new disk, I also
still have my 20Mb Vulcan, "Leonard," installed in Slot #7. In fact, the
system looks something like this--
Stock ROM 01 GS - 5.25Mb RAM
Slot 1: ImageWriter II (printer port)
Slot 2: 14.4Kbaud modem (modem port via ANSITerm high-speed driver)
Slot 3: Video Overlay Card
Slot 4:
Slot 5: 3.5" disk drive (SmartPort)
Slot 6: Apple High Speed SCSI card with Gemini, Cyclone, Tornado, T-bolt,
and Magnum. Gemini is the boot partition.
Slot 7: Vulcan controller (Leonard is bootable)
Installation of the drive went without a hitch, and with very little
trouble, I managed to make Gemini a bootable partition, then booted from it.
Suddenly, I'm getting all kinds of garbage when connected with my modem!
Dropped characters, and VT-100 garbage on the screen. The cursor jumps
all over the place. I haven't used ^L so much since back when I was
running Kermit-65 on an unenhanced ][e! All I did was install the new
SCSI card and drive!
SO...Am I having troubles related to the new disk, or is this a sudden
increase in the noise level of my telephone line? In other words, has
anyone else suffered a performance hit with communications when running a
SCSI drive? It doesn't make sense to me, but the HS-SCSI does DMA...But
I'm not accessing it while I'm on-line...
For what it's worth, Leonard will be going away soon, at which point the
HS-SCSI will move to Slot #7. Could that be part of the problem?
