GS/OS Installation woes
I would appreciate if someone familiar with installing GS/OS 6.0.1 could
help me out here.
I've got an Apple IIGS (ROM 1) with 4 meg of RAM, a 9MHz Zip Card with
64k of cache on it, and an AE Sound card.
To this, I wish to add a RamFast SCSI controller and HD that I've been
using on my Apple //e for years.
The RamFast is a Rev.C card with 256k of cache and 2.01G ROM's in it. The
HD is a 200meg Maxtor drive partitioned off into 7 volumes, 6 of 23meg
and one with whatever was left over.
Since the HD contains all of my Apple //e files and BBS files, I do not
wish to re-format this drive, I just wish to install GS/OS on one of the
empty partitions and go.
So, I dropped the RamFast controller into the IIGS, making sure to flip
switch number 2 (one way = IIGS, other way = Apple //e).
Taking my write-protected stack of 6.0.1 System disks, I turn on the
system and re-configure the RamFast set up so that the empty volume is
the boot device, and leave all of the others un-mapped (GS/OS should map
them for me). I then boot from the 3.5" Install floppy, and get to a
screen where I can choose a "Easy Update" or "Custom" installation.
I chose "Easy Update", and the install process go forth, copying files to
my hard drive. I know have a bare-bones GS/OS 6.0.1 set up that is
bootable and works fine.
(here's where it gets interesting)
So, I figure I'll go back to that install screen, select the custom
installation, and install SynthLab, the Fonts, and all of the extra items
(like Teach) that I figure I'm going to need.
Unfortunately, the custom installer won't let me install anything to the
hard drive. I get a message along the bottom that says something to the
affect, "Cannot Remove or Install files to this drive, it might be
locked".
This message appears for each of the 7 different HD volumes, the only
device it will allow me to install items to is the RAM5 drive. (fat
lotta good that'll do me when the power goes out).
Now, I know that I cannot install to the HD volume containing GS/OS if
I've booted from that device, but I should be able to install items to it
if I've booted from the Install disk. No luck, I just keep getting that
same "locked" message.
I've tried all sorts of things, but still get the same message.
I tried installing a newer ROM in the RamFast (3.00h), no luck.
I tried disabling the Zip Card, no luck.
I tried disabling DMA on the RamFast, no luck.
I tried copying the RamFast driver to the Install floppy, no luck.
I made sure that the RamFast hadn't changed the partitions to read only,
no luck.
I tried redoing the install via Easy Update, that works, but still not
able to install additional items via the custom installer.
I would appreciate any help you can give regarding this problem. I'm
dying to get things transferred over to the IIGS, so I can free up the
space in my office for a new computer.
Please help!
