Re: Finder 6.0.1

Eric offered his 2 bits on the Finder, to which I respond:

MIC(| C Breaking up the "Shut Down" dialog box. Putting Quit in the
     | file menu, and Shut Down and Restart in the Special menu.

I don't agree with breaking up the quitting options **but** I have
always wondered why Quit was not in the Files menu, like it is in most
other programs. For continuity Quit should be under Files!

MIC(| C Putting Icon Info in the file menu.

Yes.

MIC(| C Making the "Windows" menu part of the Special menu

No. I like having a Windows menu of its own.

MIC(| C Building in rSound playback. (like FinderSounder)

Yes! Though there are benefits to having the Sound CDEV as a separate
item for those who won't be using sounds to free up a little memory.

 MIC(| C Killing zooms.

An option to do so, YES. Why wait for an exploding menu if you are
running at 1 MHz to fill the screen?

 MIC(| C A desktop pattern CDEV.

YES!

MIC(| C Making Finder Help (under the Apple Menu) optional.

I don't use it either, so yes, this should be an optional.

MIC(| C Allow a single 5.25" drive to be mounted.

YES!! Someone told me that if you turn "Read 5.25" drives" in Prefs
that the computer would pick up on there not being a second 5.25" drive
online. Of course, it has to read the first one and wait a couple
seconds to figure this out... As a workaround I put a Mr Yuk-looking
icon in that attaches to "DRIVE525B" so I know not to click on it.

MIC(| C Move "Preferences" from the Special menu to a CDEV.

Uh, no. I like it as a readily available option, not so easily lost.

MIC(| C Allow for thinner scroll bars.
MIC(| C Zoom box toggles between set size and smallest needed to view

Okay on both. Something to be said for Windoze "Minimize" huh?

MIC(| If anyone has any thoughts on this, please reply. Finder 6.0.1 is
     | very impressive. Finder 6.0.2 could be even better.

Here are a few thoughts then, just off the top of my head:

-> Have Teach installed to the System directory instead of asking us
where to put it -- and have the system recognise its location
from the moment it is installed instead of having to ask every
time it is launched via clicking a document from a new source
(two launches per drive or partition sets it right now).

-> The ability to put volume icons wherever you want them. Down the
right margin of my screen are, top to bottom, the boot volume,
the two 5.25" drives (the real one and the imaginary "Mr Yuk"
one), the second volume, and the Trash. If I have a 3.5" disk
in, the icon goes below the boot volume and the second volume
scrolls to the top left-of-first-column. Soon I'll have a
SCSI cable to connect one or two more volumes as well. What I
*want* is to have all the hard drive volumes down the right side
of the screen in order (boot, second, others) followed by the
floppy drive volumes (s6d1, would prefer not to have d2 at all,
then s5d1, do not yet have a d2), and Trash in the lower left.

-> IconEd should be part an Installer option, not an extra. Note I
say it's still an optional but one that gets offered early.

-> The Control Panel CDEV has an Icons department: used to set
spacing and whether the system automatically uses full-size,
small, or none [text-only] representations of files -- having
        the default as full icons gets to be a pain in big folders;
plus some other options I'm not going to try to think of now.

-> QuickLaunch should just automatically be part of the Finder! Until
I got my own GS I assumed it was, then had to find the program.

-> Greater sound control. Example: The sound for shutting down is the
same as for restarting under the Sound CDEV, but the sound
utility of Signature diffrientiates between the two actions (a
request -- keep the sound selection method the same, since Sound
works flawlessly and Signature's sound thing is complicated).

-> Have a menu bar clock integrated, as an Install option in CDEV form.
Have some simple screen saver come with, as a CDEV as well.
This way you have both of these things readily available and
easily removable when/if you get a better one someday.

There's some input... << mushroom >>
