Probably, you are talking about the Oscillator module. This is a
square plug-in circuit with four feet that plugs into a socket near a
corner of the card. It includes a crystal and circuit in a single package.

It does sound like the Oscillator output may be turning OFF. The
Oscillator module could be bad; OR, a circuit connected to the Oscillator
could be bad; OR, maybe, the Oscillator module socket is making poor
contact.

If the problem is a bad socket contact you can do a fix. Mark the
Oscillator module and board to show how it is supposed to be plugged in.
Remove the Oscillator module. If your socket has leaf type contacts, use a
needle or hatpin to bend contact leafs in each module contact point back
towards the center to make a tighter fit. Replace the module.

If the socket can not be fixed and the contact for all four
Oscillator module feet is not firm, then you may want to replace the
socket. A good replacement socket is the kind which has solid round holes
(instead of sprongers) and is gold-plated.
