Thanks to everyone who replied with help. I was running sytem 7.1, so I
had an old version of PC Exchange. After considering the null-modem
solution, I simply got version 2 of PC Exchange, and that did the trick.
For completeness, I've included below an excellent how-to for null modem
that I was sent.
