What about just using an old Mac? Setting up a 68k Mac as an
AppleShare/LocalTalk server for a IIgs is relatively simple...
how hard would it be to use the Smartport instead? The Pizza box
LCxxx's are still quite common and usually very cheap and have all
the hardware you'd need.
