Following an e-mailed suggestion, I stripped off the first 512 bytes of
each of the .bxy versions, which was apparently a Macintosh header of some
sort.  This done, the files were recognizable and unshrinkable by nulib.

Seems like a pretty silly way of storing the files to me...
