Where there any notable problems before the Zip-GS was installed?
How did the machine behave with the Zip-GS plugged in?
When a new card is installed the flexing and vibrations associated
with pushing the card into a Slot, etc. can dislodge contacts for IC's,
plugs, and other cards in Slots. Presence of dust makes this more likely.
Pull all cards and the Power Supply and clean the interior. Note: Use
a marker pen and/or note pad to keep track of what card, plug, etc. goes
where.
Swab/wipe/dab-out dust on the motherboard. Swab clean the Slot 1-7
and Mem Expansion contacts with alcohol. Clean the Power Supply plug and
socket.
Wipe clean the contacts of each Slot card with alcohol. Check the
contacts for length. Some cards have contacts which end a few mm from the
edge of the card. (One such card, unfortunately, is the Zip-GS.) These
cards are candidates for causing bombs should they become slightly
scooched up because the Slot sprongers make contact just a ways up from
the bottom of the Slot socket.
Check the Slot sockets for looseness. (Try to wiggle side to side.)
If a Slot socket feels noticably looser than others some of its solder
contacts may have fractured. Pull the motherboard and resolder the
contacts. This is also a good time to resolder the Power Supply socket
contacts. If this is a ROM-01 board and you plan to use a Zip-GS 10MHz or
faster accelerator, you may want to add #16 gauge +5 and +12 leads from
the PS socket to Slot 3 at this time.
Clean all peripheral plugs and sockets.
Put everything back together.
