It is probably not difficult, per se, just a very big task.
Apple have released enough documentation (in the form of technotes) to
allow anyone to write a printer driver for the IIgs. All you need is
the information on the printer and port driver interfaces, low-level
QuickDraw hooks, full toolbox documentation, and sufficient
documentation on your printer's command set.
There is quite a lot of code required.
It would be a lot easier if Apple had released sample source code,
e.g. the ImageWriter II driver, but I suppose that would have
encouraged too much competition. :-(
I have written a simple port driver (CAPTURE), but they are pretty
easy - no user interface, for starters.
