Although the latest version of GW-III is a great product for desktop
publishing, ==I've heard== that it is not so good for word processing
(especially data entry). Most folks use another editor program such
as AppleWorks "Classic" (8-bit) or Hermes and then import the text
  into the page layout.

I'm not sure about your particular SCSI board but many Apple II hard
drive devices need to spin up to speed before the SCSI card can talk
to it. What happens if you power on the harddrive first and then
turn on the computer a few moments later (wait 5-10 secs)?

What happens if you plug in the keyboard cable (from the back of
the computer) to the ADB connector that you've been attempting to
use with the mouse? Does the keyboard still function? If it does
you have a bad mouse, otherwise, you have a bad ADB connection.
